First Pitch!
This week has been quite hot and humid and it continues to be extremely dry in the Lowcountry, although we finally got some rain late Wednesday night. However, we continue to work here in the Department of Athletics and in The Brigadier Foundation.
The college again moved to a four-day work week during the summer (expanded hours Monday-Thursday; only a few offices are open on Friday) in order to save on utilities in which the campus holds on to about $40,000 annually.
While the soccer team released their schedule this week, good news comes from the Southern Conference where they announced that Campbell, Gardner-Webb and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville will join the league as associate members in wrestling beginning this season. This addition is in response to UNC Greensboro’s cancellation of their program.
We hope you have a great weekend, and Happy Fathers Day!
TCBF Annual Meeting Set for July 15
The annual meeting of The Citadel Brigadier Foundation has been set for July 15, and will be held at 10 am in the Greater Issues Room of Mark Clark Hall on campus. All members in good standing may attend this meeting. For more information, please call us at 843/953-5277.
Soccer Releases ’11 Schedule
Coach Bob Winch announced the soccer team’s fall schedule for the 2011 and the Bulldogs will host 10 games at Washington Light Infantry Field including six Southern Conference matches.
Winch, who earned his second consecutive SoCon Coach of the Year Award in 2010, looks to carry over the success of last year's record-breaking team with the return of Mariana Garcia, who was tabbed as Southern Conference Freshman and Player of the Year for the 2010 season.
The 2011 season starts with a slate of eight non-conference games beginning on the road against the Clemson Tigers on Aug. 21 before heading back to Charleston for a three game homestand against Winthrop, USC Upstate, and Navy. The last four non-conference competitions will be played against Mississippi, SC State, Charleston Southern and Presbyterian.
The Bulldogs, who are coming off of their most successful season in program and conference history (12-8-1 overall; 7-4 in SoCon play), will kick off the league schedule with a weekend homestand against Western Carolina on Sept. 23 and Appalachian State on Sept. 25.

Southern Conference Adds Associate Members for Wrestling
The Southern Conference has added three universities as associate members in the sport of wrestling. Campbell University, Gardner-Webb University and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville will join the league beginning with the 2011-12 season.
The addition of the three schools, in conjunction with UNCG's discontinuation of its program following the 2010-11 season, will bring the conference's wrestling membership to eight schools.
Campbell, located in Buies Creek, N.C., and Gardner-Webb, situated in Boiling Springs, N.C., are familiar to SoCon teams, as four of six league teams competed against the Camels in dual meets last season while the Runnin' Bulldogs faced each conference team.
Campbell and Gardner-Webb are full-time members of the Big South Conference.
Campbell, which has an enrollment of 3,000 students on its main campus, has fielded a wrestling program since 1968. Gardner-Webb, boasting a student population of 4,300, is entering its 23rd season of wrestling in 2011-12.
SIUE, a school with 14,107 students located in suburban St. Louis, has a rich wrestling tradition that includes three consecutive Division II national championships in 1984, '85 and '86. The Cougars are members of the Ohio Valley Conference for the majority of their sports.
The three new institutions will join Appalachian State University, The Citadel, Davidson College, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Virginia Military Institute as the eight schools in the Southern Conference for wrestling.
The Southern Conference, which first held a wrestling championship in 1930 and has done so in each season since 1947, will conduct its 75th wrestling championship in Chattanooga, Tenn. next March. The league itself, founded in 1921, is entering its 91st season in 2011-12.
