First Pitch!
Attention ladies: If you are interested in learning more about the fundamentals of football and/or shooting guns, then this issue is for you.
The Citadel Football Association is kicking off their third annual Women’s 101 Clinic on July 27 while our rifle program is assisting in receiving free handgun lessons from NRA instructors on June 24 (see below).
Baseball season concluded with a defeat at the hands of Elon, and members of our media relations staff are currently updating our records as the 2011-12 athletic season comes to an end.
Now begins the preparation for the 2012-13 campaigns.
Our friends at the Horry Citadel Club (Myrtle
Beach/Georgetown) are extending an invitation to participate in
their 28th Annual Golf outing on June 23 that features a 50/50
reverse raffle that could land someone $5,000. See below for
more information.
Please know that there will not be issue of Today’s Blue & White next week, but we’ll return shortly.
As you’ve come to expect, we have another solid issue of news and notes, so enjoy and Go Bulldogs!!!
Diamond Dogs Eliminated in SoCon Tournament by
Elon
David Whitehead worked a complete game as No. 3 seed Elon eliminated No. 7 seed The Citadel, 7-3, in the 2012 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament last Thursday evening at Fluor Field.
The Citadel (25-33) was eliminated from the tournament with its second loss in the event.
Whitehead scattered eight hits and gave up three runs while tying a season-high with six strikeouts. The sophomore did not walk a batter while tossing his first career complete game.
Elon put the game out of reach with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, punctuated by a pair of two-run home runs. After a Sebastian Gomez RBI double in the fourth, Joey Tomko drilled his second homer of the season to make it 4-0 Elon.
In the fifth, Alex Swim singled in Blaine Bower, and he was followed by Ryan Kinsella's opposite field shot to left, which was the sophomore's eighth of the year.
The Citadel scored twice in the sixth on a Justin Mackert RBI double and an RBI ground out from Bo Thompson, but that was all the scoring the Bulldogs could muster. Starter Logan Cribb surrendered five runs, four of them earned, on eight hits in 4.2 innings.
Women’s Football 101 Returns for Third Year
The Citadel Football Association will present the Third Annual Women’s Football Clinic on Friday, July 27 at Seignious Hall on campus.
Attendees to Football 101 will spend time going behind-the-scenes with tours of the team’s meeting room, weight room, training and equipment rooms. Citadel coaches will provide instruction on the basics of the game as well as the option offense that is currently being utilized by the Bulldogs. Participants will also get in-depth instruction in player positions, walking through plays in addition to offensive and defensive strategies.
A catered dinner for all attendees will be held at the Pearson Lounge at Johnson Hagood Stadium. A special program will follow with Kay Higgins, wife of head coach Kevin Higgins, and other of the coaches’ wives, in addition to a tour of the press box area.
Prior to the dinner, the group will “hit” the stadium field for a “practice” that includes running plays, passing and receiving, tackling dummies and the all-important “fun run to the end zone,” where one can perform individual touchdown dances.
Goody bags for all attendees contain a T-shirt, a complete football information notebook, a 2012 souvenir schedule poster and wallet schedule, and two reserved-seat tickets ($50 value) to a Citadel home football game.
Last year, more than 50 women enjoyed a memorable time and learned enough about football to impress even their husbands and/or male friends.
A portion of the clinic is tax deductible as proceeds benefit The Citadel Football Association’s Scholarship through The Citadel Brigadier Foundation.
