Opening Tipoff!
Spike barks that it now time to start planning your fall social calendar as the 2012 football schedule has been released. Renewed rivalries with VMI and Charleston Southern are highlights in addition to visiting NC State. And the Furman game returns to the end of the season, where it was positioned from 1977-92.
Congratulations are extended to veteran wrestling coach Rob Hjerling, who notched his 100th career victory with the Bulldogs’ 36-6 thumping of VMI on Saturday at McAlister Field House.
It will be a busy Saturday in McAlister Field House on Saturday as the past standouts from our basketball teams will battle a youthful team from the Corps of Cadets in the 9th Annual Alumni Basketball Game, which begins at 2 pm. And later, during halftime of The Citadel – Furman game (which tips off at 7:05 pm), we will recognize Col. Jake Burrows ’40 with a new banner in the Field House. Of note, it was Col. Burrows’ and his basketball teammates that were involved in The Armory’s opening and dedication in 1940.
Former Atlanta Braves All-Star John Smoltz is here for tonight’s 8th Annual Hot Stove Banquet, and if you don’t yet have your tickets, call our good friends at the Charleston RiverDogs at 843/577-DOGS (3647) and they’ll set you up. There are reportedly less than 50 tickets available, and you don’t want to miss this one!
As you’ve come to expect, we have another packed issue of news and notes, so enjoy and Go Bulldogs!!!
Football Schedule Is Released
An early season visit from Georgia Southern and road contests against North Carolina State and Furman highlight The Citadel's 2012 football schedule.
The Bulldogs open the season at Johnson Hagood Stadium on Sept. 1 against Charleston Southern before hosting Georgia Southern the following Saturday. A year ago, the Eagles survived a field goal attempt in the final minute to pull out a narrow 14-12 win in Statesboro en route to the Southern Conference championship and an eventual berth in the FCS national semifinals.
The remaining home games on the schedule include dates with Chattanooga on Sept. 29 (Hall of Fame Game), Western Carolina on Oct. 13 (Parents Day) and Elon on Nov. 3 (Homecoming).
The games against Charleston Southern, Georgia Southern and Chattanooga will kickoff at 6 p.m. while the final two contests get under way at 2 p.m.
Season tickets at the early rate of $125 are available by visiting the Athletic Ticket Office at McAlister Field House during normal business hours or calling 843-953-DOGS (3647).
After playing their first road game on Sept. 15 at Appalachian State, the Bulldogs travel to Raleigh, N.C., the following week for their first meeting against the Wolfpack since 1983 and first game against an ACC opponent since opening the 2009 season at North Carolina.
The Citadel also plays at Samford on Oct. 6 and Wofford on Oct. 27 before closing the regular season with consecutive away games at VMI and Furman on Nov. 10 and 17, respectively.
The game against the Keydets is the second of a home-and-home series which began with a 41-14 Bulldog victory last year in Charleston. That was the first meeting between the former SoCon rivals since they squared off in 2007 in Lexington, Va.
When the Bulldogs and Paladins meet in Greenville, it will mark the first time the teams have played in their traditional spot on the final weekend of the regular season since 1992.
The Citadel to Honor Jake Burrows’ Jersey No. 3 with a Banner in McAlister Field House
The Citadel Department of Athletics will honor Col. Jake Burrows’ jersey No. 3 with a banner in McAlister Field House to commemorate the Hall of Famer’s many contributions to his alma mater.
During halftime of Saturday’s basketball game against rival Furman, the College will unfurl their fourth banner alongside Les Robinson, Art Musselman and Regan Truesdale as individuals who have been previously recognized. Another banner reflects the Bulldogs’ participation in the 2009 CollegeInsider.com Tournament, the college’s lone postseason appearance.
A three-sport athlete from 1937-40 and a 1980 inductee into The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame, the 93-year-old Burrows earned a total of eight letters during his career, including three each in basketball and football and two in track;
During his career at The Citadel, Col. Burrows established himself as the school’s finest basketball player of his era. He earned three berths on the all-state team and was twice named All-Southern Conference. In an era in which teams played considerably fewer games than they do today, he scored 611 points and his average of 11.5 points per game equated to 31 percent of the team’s total;
As a junior in 1938-39, he averaged a career-best 14.1 points per game and reached double figures in all but two of the team’s 18 games, including a 20-point performance in a win over Clemson;
Col. Burrows played during one of the most successful stretches in the long history of Citadel basketball, with his teams winning 35 of 53 games including six victories each over South Carolina and Furman;
He was the Regimental Commander for the 1939-40 academic year in which he also served as the basketball team captain. Col. Burrows was the first cadet to graduate in the new “Armory,” which opened that year;
Col. Burrows later replaced his friend and mentor, Col. David S. McAlister, as the college’s director of cadet activities. In that role, Col. Burrows created the coveted Silver Shako, a trophy that’s presented to the winner of the annual Citadel-VMI football game that is still in existence. He also guided the Class of 1976’s gift to the college – the Liberty Bell, which continues to grace the lobby of Bond Hall.
Basketball Showing Improvement
Reserve Bo Holston scored a team-high 14 points, one short of a career-high, but it was four double-figure scorers that pushed Wofford to a 62-55 victory at McAlister Field House on Thursday. Holston energized the lineup by hitting 5-of-8 from the floor, including a 3-pointer, while making his impact defensively with one steal and a block.
The Citadel finished 20-of-46 (43.5%) from the field, taking advantage of a 12-for-25 performance in the second half. Holston led the way with his five field goals, followed closely by Mike Groselle, who scored 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field. Marshall Harris III, in his first collegiate start, capped a 3-of-6 performance with nine points, three rebounds and two assists. DeVontae Wright was also instrumental as he led the Bulldogs with nine rebounds.
Led by Mike Groselle's 10th double-double of the season that included 20 points and 14 rebounds, The Citadel extended Georgia Southern to double overtime before the Eagles emerged with a 78-72 victory at Hanner Fieldhouse on Monday. Groselle's performance marked the third straight 20-point outing and fourth in his last five games. He has now recorded 18 career double-doubles and 10 in the 2011-12 campaign, moving within two of Patrick Elmore (1989-90) for most in a single-season in program history.
It was the Bulldogs’ first double-overtime game since Jan. 12, 2002, against Western Carolina in Cullowhee.
The Citadel battled through the fatigue of the contest with eight players and closed by hitting 31-of-57 (54.4%) from the floor and 4-of-18 (22.2%) from beyond the arc. Joining Groselle in double-figures points was Marshall Harris III, who established a new career-high with 14 points. Groselle finished 8-of-13 from the floor, while Harris III knocked down 6-of-8 from the perimeter along with two 3-pointers. Also coming through with solid outings were Lawrence Miller and Bo Holston, scoring nine points each, and Cosmo Morabbi, who tallied eight. Groselle controlled the paint with 14 rebounds (11 defensive), as the Bulldogs finished with a 32-29 edge on the glass.
Groselle topped the 20-point plateau for the third time in the last four games scoring 22 points, but it was a hot-shooting Davidson squad that came away victorious, 80-51, on Saturday night at John M. Belk Arena. Groselle was the bright spot in a tough night for the Bulldogs, hitting 7-of-10 from the floor and 8-for-11 from the free throw line, en route to his game-high 22 points.
Despite hitting 14-of-27 (51.9%) from the floor in the second half, The Citadel was unable to mount a comeback after falling behind by 31 points at the half (47-16). Groselle was joined in scoring by Bo Holston, Marshall Harris III and DeVontae Wright, who scored five points apiece. The Bulldogs managed just 3-of-11 (27.3%) from 3-point range, as Holston, Harris III and Ashton Moore each converted one shot from beyond the arc.

Time to "Lace 'Em Up Again" Set for Jan. 28

known as the time to “Lace ‘Em Up Again,” will be
held tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 28) at 2 pm prior the Bulldogs’
game with Furman (7:05 tipoff).
This is the time to join many former Citadel basketball players
(spanning several decades) in the special game that features the
common bond of playing hoops for the Bulldogs in McAlister Field
House. The Alumni Game participants will be introduced at the
Furman game.
And, of course, the true goal of the Alumni Game is for veteran Director of Sports Medicine Andy Clawson to simply sit and watch, and not work.

Three Pinfalls Lead Wrestling to 36-6 Victory over VMI as Coach Hjerling Notches Win No. 100
Three Bulldogs notched wins via pinfall as The Citadel clobbered Virginia Military Institute, 36-6, Sunday afternoon at McAlister Field House to give head coach Rob Hjerling his 100th career victory. The win was the Bulldogs’ fifth straight over VMI.
Seth Vernon began the action as he collected his first pin as a Bulldog, stopping his VMI rival at the 2:46 mark of the 149-pound match. Pierre Frazile increased the lead to 9-0 with a 3-2 decision at 157, while VMI got on the board at 165 with Carry Joseph's 9-4 decision.
After No. 18 Turtogtokh Luvsandorj fell in overtime, The Citadel stormed back to win the final six matches to secure the 30-point victory. At 184, Josh Tuck was victorious with an 11-10 decision. Tuck trailed, 8-7, heading into the final period, but scored three near-fall points to take a 10-8 lead.
A 4-3 decision by Kelby Smith at 197 extended his winning streak to eight matches and Odie Delaney notched his fifth straight pin at heavyweight, putting the shoulders of VMI heavyweight to the mat at 1:03 mark. Richard Alarcon won via forfeit at 125, and Kyle Casaletto scored The Citadel's third first-period pin of the afternoon as he stopped his VMI opponent at the 1:57 mark of their 133-pound bout. Jordan Dix wrapped things up with a 3-1 decision at 141.
On Friday in McAlister Field House, Delaney picked up his fourth straight victory by fall, but The Citadel wrestling team lost to visiting Appalachian State, 21-19.
Appalachian opened a 3-0 lead as Dix fell at 141 pounds. The Bulldogs evened the match at 149-pounds as Seth Vernon won, 7-6. The Mountaineers won the next two matches to open an 11-3 lead. The Citadel chipped away, winning three of the next four matches to take a 16-15 advantage. Luvsandorj dominated his rival in the 174-pound match, earning a 13-5 major decision with six takedowns. Kelby Smith ran his winning streak to seven with a 9-4 decision at 197 pounds and cut the Bulldogs' deficit to 15-10.
Delaney scored a pinfall victory at the 6:12 mark, putting the shoulders of his opponent to the mat in the third period while ahead 3-0. The fall gave the Bulldogs a 16-15 lead with two matches remaining.
The lead was short-lived however, as Alarcon fell in the 125-pound match. The Bulldogs needed a pin in the final bout at 133, but Kyle Casaletto was unable to close out Brett Boston, who held on for an 8-4 decision.

Women’s Indoor Track & Field Team Capture School Relay Records to Conclude Successful Weekend at the Captains Invitational
The women's track and field team smashed three school relay records in the 4x800m, 4x400m and 4x200m race at the Freeman Center Indoor Track on the campus of Christopher Newport University over the weekend.
The 4x800m relay team comprised of Micah Wessinger (2:17 split), Danielle McKee (2:20), Christina Shonbeck (2:32) and Erinn Carter (2:30) demolished the school record by running a combined 9:40.74. The mark was good enough for a second place finish at the race and beat the previous school record, set last season at the same track, by more than 24 seconds.
Shortly after capturing the record in the 4x800, the younger team, comprised of sophomores Taylor Viana (28.2 split) and Christine Hinds (27.9) along with freshmen Alexandra Moss (27.3) and Tanisha Bethel (5.9), established a new school record in the 4x200. The group combined for a 1:49.45, just under three seconds better than the previous mark (1:52.01) set last year at the Freeman Center.
Bethel wasn't done setting records for the day as she also tied the freshman record of 8.12 seconds in the 60m, etching her in fourth place on the all-time list. Moss ran an 8.26 seconds, 60m dash to make her eighth on the list.
The Bulldogs also competed in the 200m intermediate hurdles for the first time in program history as Vanessa Hope set the first school record with a 31.54 (seconds). Andriana Love took the record from her shortly after, noting a 30.64. Senior captain Francesca McCrary landed in third place (31.75).
In throws, Anna Fuzy set a personal-best in the weight throw with 42-5.5 to finish in eighth place and made her sixth all-time in school history. Savannah Emmrich jumped to a quick start in her collegiate career as she set the freshman record in the pole vault with an 8-5.75 to place her second all-time in school history (the previous freshman record was 8-0).
Sophomores Nicole Levermann and Andriana Love also jumped out to great starts to the 2012 indoor season as they both broke 10 seconds in the 60m high hurdles with times of 9.90 and 9.91, respectively.
On Saturday, the women's team snagged their third school record relay in the 4x400m race as the team of Wessinger (60.7 split), McKee (61.5), Moss (61.9) and Bethel (58.9) turned a record-setting performance in the 4x400m race with a 4:03.26. The mark moves the squad to the top of The Citadel's All-Time list in the event by just .26 seconds (4:03.52).
The freshmen duo of Moss and Bethel continued their impressive collegiate-opener on Saturday as both found their names etched in Citadel history by running record-setting times in the 200m event. Moss ran a 27.17 to place her ninth all-time, while Bethel cruised into sixth place all-time with a 26.94.
Wessinger continued her successes on the second day, taking the crown in the 600m run with a 1:38.18, while McKee moved into second place all-time in the 1,000m event with a 3:09.35.
In the field events, Nicole Levermann had a personal-best throw in the shot put as she recorded a heave of 34"8.25'. Andriana Love threw 38"8.25' in the same event to move into third place all-time at The Citadel.

Rifle Fires a Second Place Score of 2,260 in SEARC 5 Competition
Junior captain Julia McCullohs led all Citadel shooters in Saturday's match with an air rifle score of 568 en route to a second place finish at the fifth Southeastern Air Rifle Conference match of the season at the Inouye Marksmanship Center on Saturday. The Cadets finished with a SEARC team total of 2,260, a mere 44 points behind first place N.C. State (2,304).
The Bulldogs’ second place finish is their third of the season and leaves them comfortably in the same position in the conference, behind No. 20 N.C. State, with just one more SEARC match left (Feb.18 at home) before The Citadel hosts the conference championships on Mar. 3.
Freshmen William Wutzer and Robert Jackson, who have led their team in all but one match this season, finished in the second (565) and fourth (563) slots for the Bulldogs, respectively, while senior captain Kristofer Small captured third with a 564.
Also shooting air rifle for The Citadel was Nathaniel Moy (557), Terri Craig (552), Richard Hunton (551), Joshua Anacay (548), Margaret LaRiviere (545), Julie O'Meara (544), Teddi Haliscak (535), Hunter Parrish (514), Sharnay Green (505) and James Coker (496).
In NCAA small bore action, Moy recorded his personal-best score of 554, while Jackson finished right behind with a season-best mark of 549.
