Opening Kickoff!
The Saturday evening that we’ve been waiting for has finally arrived as our Bulldogs host rival Charleston Southern in the season-opening football game at Johnson Hagood Stadium with kickoff set for 6 pm.
And be sure to stick around your tailgate area afterwards as we have a special fireworks display that begins approximately 20 minutes after the game’s conclusion.
Additionally, don’t forget that our good friends at the Stray Dog Society provide true pregame atmosphere as they welcome the team to Johnson Hagood Stadium with the “Dog Walk” that takes place two hours prior to kickoff.
While all of the hoopla surrounds the opening of football season, both our volleyball and soccer teams have begun their seasons (see wrap-ups below).

Bulldogs Host Buccaneers in Football Home Opener on Saturday
The Citadel opens its
105th season of intercollegiate football Saturday
against crosstown rival Charleston Southern at 6 pm. The
Bulldogs are hoping for luck to be on their side this season after
dropping five games by 10 points or fewer en route to a 4-7
campaign in 2011. The Buccaneers, meanwhile, are looking to
snap a 12-game losing streak that dates back to 2010 season finale.
The Citadel – Charleston Southern Football Series
The Citadel and Charleston Southern have met five times, all at Johnson Hagood Stadium, and the Bulldogs hold a 4-1 series advantage. The teams have not played since The Citadel claimed a 35-14 victory in the 2007 season opener. The previous year the Buccaneers prevailed in a 38-35 double overtime shootout for their only win over the Bulldogs.

The Citadel in Season Openers
The Citadel has an all-time record of 55-46-3 in its previous 104 season openers, including a mark of 5-2 under head coach Kevin Higgins, with both of those losses coming against FBS opponents. Higgins is 6-1 in home openers.
The Bulldogs have opened the season against Charleston Southern on three previous occasions (2003, ‘05 and ‘07) and are 3-0 in those contests.

"Dog Walk" -- Greet the Bulldogs on Their Arrival at Every Home Football Game
Join the Stray
Dog Society as they meet, greet and cheer the Bulldogs two hours
prior to every home game at the Altman Athletic Center parking lot
on Hagood Avenue. Help welcome the football-playing Bulldogs
as they strut up “Stray Dog Alley,” accompanied by our
cheerleaders and Spike. The Stray Dog Society Tailgate hosts
a pregame social and celebration following the Dog Walk two hours
before every game with live entertainment, fellowship and loads of
fun. This is evolving into a great place to mix and mingle
before the Regimental Band leads the Corps of Cadets as they march
down Hagood Avenue and into Johnson Hagood Stadium.
New Voice at Johnson Hagood Stadium
After last year’s Homecoming Game on Nov. 12, Johnson Hagood Stadium public address announcer Sam Evans ’78 announced that he was “retiring” from the press box after 27 years of service.
He is being replaced this fall by Jimmie Guyton, who followed Evans as the PA announcer for basketball after winning an open audition that The Citadel held last fall.
Football Team Honors Bob Carson ‘73
The football team is honoring former player and longtime supporter Bob Carson ’73 by wearing a sticker with his number 41 on their helmets this season. Carson, a 2002 inductee into the Athletic Hall of Fame, passed away on April 19.
Carson was a team captain, most valuable player and AP honorable mention All-American in 1972 and finished his career with 1,576 rushing yards, ranking third in school history at the time of his graduation.
Toward the end of halftime, we will present a tribute to Carson on the videoboard.
Bulldogs Re-Introduce “Old” Look
For the first time since the 1970s, the football team will be wearing white helmets with The Citadel blue “Block C” logo. The Bulldogs wore similar helmets from 1973-77, but the current one most resembles the headgear worn in 1977 when the stripes down the middle of the helmet were eliminated.
Andy Clawson Marks Milestone
Veteran Director of Sports Medicine Andy Clawson is in his 40th season at The Citadel and will be working his 434th career game when the Bulldogs host Charleston Southern on Saturday.
Clawson continues to enjoy a highly-distinguished career that includes his 2001 enshrinement into the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from his alma mater, Henderson State, in 2002.
Fireworks to Conclude First Home Football Game
An expanded fireworks display will
light up the night-time sky over historic Johnson Hagood Stadium
after the Sept. 1 football home opener against Charleston
Southern. Provided by Kirkman Broadcasting and their family
of stations and sponsors, the pyrotechnical presentation by
Zambelli Fireworks will begin approximately 20 minutes after the
conclusion of the game, giving fans ample time to return to their
respective tailgate areas and enjoy the show.
Sweet Johnson Hagood Stadium Suite Is Available

Soccer Drops Openers to Maine, Bryant
Mariana Garcia posted The Citadel's lone goal as the Bulldogs were topped by the Black Bears, 5-1, on Friday in the season opener on Alumni Field in Orono, Maine. Garcia railed in an 18th minute goal off an assist from a corner kick by Anastasia Mesa to tie the game at 1-1. It was all Maine for the remainder of the game as the Black Bears posted four goals in the final 56 minutes from four different players.
The Black Bears outshot the Bulldogs, 21-3. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Katchen played the first 45 minutes allowing three goals and saving three, while senior captain Cassie Palmacci finished the game with one save.
On Sunday Garcia netted her second goal in two games as the Bulldogs fell to Bryant, 5-1, to close out the weekend at Bulldog Stadium in Smithfield, R.I.
For the second consecutive game the combination of Mesa-to-Garcia resulted in an early goal as Garcia knocked in a seventh-minute score to give The Citadel a quick 1-0 lead. The goal was Garcia's 19th in her career leaving her just nine shy of the school record and two short of Amy Loughran.
Volleyball Drops A Pair of Matches in Las Vegas
The front row tandem of Ise d'Angelo and Rachael Farrell combined for 14 kills and eight digs, however it was Northern Arizona that completed the 25-9, 25-14, 25-18 sweep of the Bulldogs in the season-opener at the UNLV Tournament on Friday.
The Citadel got a solid defensive outing from senior Emily Dalton, who finished with nine digs, while Amanda Rudnik recorded seven. Lauren Hurt was a defensive force as she notched four assisted blocks, followed closely by Farrell, who finished with three.
D'Angelo capped off her solid showing at the UNLV Tournament with nine kills and nine digs against CSU-Bakersfield. Meanwhile, Farrell finished with six kills, four digs and was one of three Bulldogs with three assisted blocks in the tough 26-24, 25-18, 25-13 loss to the Roadrunners. The match was played in Las Vegas.
Jessica Maxwell sparked the Bulldogs in the early going of the first set, forcing a pair of attack errors by Bakersfield to establish an early 3-1 lead. The Roadrunners quickly responded with a 12-1 run, halted when Maxwell drove home a kill on a pass from Mikaela Tracy.
Tracy kept the momentum going in
serve when she forced back-to-back attack errors to pull the Cadets
within 13-10 of the lead. The Citadel eventually regained the lead
on a series of service points by Erin Bucherl, 16-15, before
Bakersfield drew even. The set reached a climatic 24-24 tie
on an unforced error by Bakersfield. That was followed by a
Sawyer kill and a Bowen service ace for the final points of a 26-24
win.

6th Annual Kevin Higgins Golf Classic Will Be Friday, Sept. 28
The Sixth Annual Kevin Higgins Golf Classic, hosted by Bufort Blanton ’54, will be held at Miler Country Club in Summerville on Friday morning, Sept. 28. 22nd Annual Homecoming Golf Tournament Is Nov. 2
The 22nd Annual Homecoming Golf Tournament is set for Friday, Nov. 2 at Patriots Point Golf Club on Mt. Pleasant. Registration is set from 7:15-8am with the shotgun start going at 8:30. Participants that sign up prior to Sept. 30 get a discount ($125 as compared to $135 AFTER Sept. 30). Fee includes green fees, cart, box lunch, beverage, Citadel Titleist golf cap, Citadel Footjoy Golf shirt, sleeve of Prov1 golf balls, range balls and more. Hole sponsorships are available as is the opportunity for Reunion Classes to battle each other for a tournament within a tournament. Early registration is encouraged as we are sure to sell out. "We talked about it during the off-season, and we wanted to give it a good chance in camp to evaluate. Bottom line, we said do we want Cullen Brown on the field 20 percent of the time (at tight end)? Or do we want him on the field 80 to 100 percent of the time? … He's one of our best blockers, very physical. When you play tight end in the triple option, you are very familiar with the (techniques) of the tackle position, so it's not really an adjustment for him at all, other than that he will be on the field more."
