Opening Kickoff!

While the Bulldogs were positioned to win the overtime football game at Elon this past Saturday, the squad has to re-focus as they visit a much-improved Chattanooga team for a 6 pm game on Saturday.

Both cross country teams finished in third place during Saturday's 31st Annual Will Wilson Citadel Invitational held at James Island County Park.  The soccer team showed great character by rebounding with a win after a disappointing loss to open their portion of the league schedule.  Volleyball has encountered a rugged stretch and has the opportunity to get back on the winning side this weekend.  Fall tennis, under first-year coach Kemper Baker, began its season with an appearance at the 2011 Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.

To help better plan your spring, Coach Fred Jordan this week released the baseball schedule that is highlighted by a series at the University of Minnesota and another visit to Riley Park by two-time defending national champion South Carolina.

If you haven’t yet made plans to attend the 34th Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Banquet on Oct. 28, you better make them soon as we’re more than halfway sold out and can seat only 380 folks.

As you’ve come to expect, we have another packed issue of news and notes, so enjoy and Go Bulldogs!!!

Football to Face Chattanooga Tomorrow at 6 pm

Saturday evening’s matchup between The Citadel and Chattanooga at 6 pm at Finley Stadium will be the 45th meeting between the two rivals.  The Mocs lead the overall series, 26-16-2, that began in 1926, and also lead, 16-5-1, in games in Tennessee.  The most recent Citadel win in Chattanooga took place on Sept. 29, 200 in a 41-16 win.  Since then, Chattanooga has lost the last two contest against the Mocs.

Chattanooga is coming off a 14-12 loss at No. 3 Appalachian State, to balance their record at 2-2 while The Citadel is coming off a 18-15 overtime loss at Elon.

Elon Snags Overtime Win

Elon kicker Adam Shreiner drilled a 33-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Phoenix to an 18-15 win over The Citadel on Saturday afternoon at Rhodes Stadium.

After the Phoenix missed wide right on a 44-yard field goal attempt with four seconds remaining in the fourth quarter following a fumble by The Citadel, Elon quarterback Thomas Wilson put Shreiner within range in OT after three straight rushes up the middle gave his kicker another shot from the right hash from 33-yards out.  As the ball sailed between the uprights, the fourth-largest crowd in Rhodes Stadium history (10,883) erupted.

Following Shreiner’s boot to give Elon a three-point edge at 18-15, the Bulldogs ran three plays and kicker Ryan Sellers attempted to tie the game from 37 yards away.  But the redshirt senior’s kick sailed right and the Phoenix escaped with the OT win.

Soccer Rebounds to Beat App State after Falling to Western Carolina

The soccer team bounced back after allowing a goal in the first minute of play to beat Appalachian State, 3-2, on Sunday at WLI Field.

The Citadel was caught on their heels to start the game as the Mountaineers took the opening kick down the field and scored 47 seconds into the match.  A combination of the Bulldogs physical play and Charleston humidity allowed The Citadel to wear down the Mountaineers defense as they would dominate the remainder of the first half, spraying the next seven shots on Appalachian State's defense.

In the 32nd minute, Nicole Levermann dribbled past the Mountaineer defense and fired a laser into top corner of the net to even the game at one goal apiece.  Angela Foyt scored off a deflection to hand The Citadel a 2-1 halftime lead.

But Mariana Garcia’s unassisted goal at the 52:06 mark gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 advantage in which ASU could not recover, even though they pulled to within one, 3-2.

On Friday, sophomore Vanessa Aponte netted her team-high fifth goal of the season in the 29th minute of the Southern Conference opener against Western Carolina, but one score would not be enough as the Bulldogs fell to the Catamounts, 2-1, at WLI Field.

Western Carolina started the game aggressively with two quick shots in the fourth minute that both sailed wide left on senior goalkeeper Whitney Nave.  Five minutes later the Catamounts' physical play would pay off as WCU would drill a 30-yard laser over Nave's head and into the back of the net to give Western Carolina a quick 1-0 lead.

Volleyball Bows to CofC and UNC Greensboro

The Citadel fell in its Southern Conference home opener to UNC Greensboro, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-22, on Sunday afternoon at McAlister Field House.  The Bulldogs were led statistically by Kaona Mercer, who finished with 10 kills, as well as Kathryn Johnston and Emily Dalton, with nine digs apiece.

Mercer connected on 10 kills in 23 total attacks, her third straight match with double-digit kills, to finish with a .348 attack percentage.  Also with a solid front row performance was Rachael Farrell, who recorded seven kills. The defensive performances of Johnston and Dalton were integral in giving The Citadel a 41-39 edge in digs.

On Friday at TD Bank Arena, rival College of Charleston took the first match 25-18, but surrendered the second to The Citadel, 25-20, but the Cougars won the third and fourth matches for a 3-1 victory.

Mercer led The Citadel offense with 10 kills and solid defensive performances were turned in by Alexa Dahlstrom (11 digs) and Dalton (10 digs).  Johnston contributed nine kills, while Cassie Uribe notched eight.  The Citadel tallied 37 team kills while Dahlstrom handed out 30 assists.

McKee, Waldrop Lead Bulldogs to Third Place Finishes at Will Wilson Invitational

Junior Austin Waldrop and sophomore Danielle McKee led the men and women's cross country teams to third place finishes in Saturday's 31st-annual Will Wilson Citadel Invitational held at James Island County Park.

The men's team kicked off the meet with an 8K race and finished strong, recording three top-15 finishers.  Waldrop led all Bulldogs for the second consecutive race as he finished fifth with a 27:29. Junior Kyle Keene, who sat out the last two races with an injury, came back strong and recorded a 28:06 to land him in 11th place.  Freshmen Raeven Lantz (28:35, 14th place), Atom Young (28:45, 17th place) and PJ Wasilchak (28:52, 18th place) rounded out the top-5 for the men.

McKee continued to lead her squad to the finish line as the highest placing Bulldog with an eighth place finish (19:52).  Behind McKee were freshman Emily Fields (21:01) and sophomore Christina Shonbeck (21:09), who finished seconds apart to place 21st and 22nd, respectively.

The individual crown on the men's side went to Savannah State's Rueben Israel-McBee (27: 08).  College of Charleston's Dena O'Brien captured her second consecutive individual crown at The Citadel Invitational, with an 18:13.

The Cougar women's team won the team trophy for the race, recording an average time of 19:26, while Winthrop topped the men's standings with an average time of 28:01.

Tennis Participates in Competition in the 2011 Southern Intercollegiate Championships at Athens

The tennis team competed against some of the best players in the country when they participated in the 2011 Southern Intercollegiate Championships that concluded at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., on Monday.

Experiencing success early in the four-day competition were junior David Orces and freshman Peter Bleach, who both claimed victories in the first round on Friday.  Orces defeated LSU's James Turberville in Division I singles action in three sets (5-7, 6-2, 7-3) and went on to the second round to compete against seventh-ranked Nassim Slilam of the University of Florida, who defeated Orces, 6-1, 6-2.

Bleach defeated Samford's Scott Foster (7-6, 7-5), advancing to the round of 16 in Division III singles.  However, he came up short against Lipscomb's Stuart Tierney (6-2, 6-1).

Also competing in singles action on Friday were sophomores James Atkinson and Dillon Berkabile in Division II singles and sophomore Elliot Sperr and senior Josh Cook in Division III singles.  All three advanced to consolation rounds, but were unsuccessful claiming wins against their competitors.

In doubles action, Atkinson and Berkabile teamed up against Georgia State's Thomas Cook and Victor Valente in Division I doubles and came up short in the opening round, 8-4.  The duo of Bleach and Cook automatically advanced to the second round in Doubles II action on Saturday after a bye.  The tandem that competed against Liberty's Shea Thomas and Dillon Segur fell to the Flames, 8-3.  Orces and Sperr tag-teamed against Minnesota's Juan Pablo Ramirez and Brendan Ruddock in the second round of Division II doubles, also after a bye in round one, but they too came up short, 8-3.
