Opening Tipoff!
Cars have been double-parked around the battalions most of this week as cadets hurry home for their well-deserved end-of-semester furlough.
While only our basketball and wrestling teams continue practice and play during the holidays, those of us in The Citadel Brigadier Foundation and Department of Athletics take a moment to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas along with a yearning for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year. This past year has been another great one, and we hope that 2012 is even better.
This will be the final issue of Today’s Blue & White for this calendar year, and we’ll be back on Friday, Jan. 6. In the meantime, please continue to follow us through www.CitadelSports.com.
As you’ve come to expect, we have another packed issue of news and notes, so enjoy and Go Bulldogs!!!

Basketball Falls to Charleston Southern
Freshman guard Ashton Moore scored 18 points and was joined in double figures by Mike Groselle (15 points) and DeVontae Wright (11 points) as rival Charleston Southern emerged with the 88-69 victory at McAlister Field House on Wednesday. The Bulldogs closed the contest by hitting 30-of-68 (44.1%) from the field, including 6-of-14 (42.9%) from 3-point range, but it was Charleston Southern's 19-of-31 (61.3%) shooting in the second half that made for the difference.
The trio of Moore, Groselle and Wright marked the sixth time this season that at least three Citadel players reached double figures in scoring. Moore led all Citadel scorers with eight field goals, including a pair from beyond the arc, while Groselle tallied seven and Wright closed with five. The Cadets rebounded from a tough opening half, which they hit only 14-of-37 (37.8%) to knock down 16-of-31 (51.6%) from the floor in the second half. Groselle's seven rebounds, including five on the offensive glass, anchored the middle for The Citadel.

Basketball Team Makes Positive Impression on Local Youth during Holidays
Between studying for their final exams and preparing for Wednesday night’s tilt with Charleston Southern, members of basketball team spent their weekend at McAlister Field House working with more than 300 five- and six-year olds from the Mount Pleasant Recreation Center FUNdamentals Clinic.
Coach Chuck Driesell and his team spent quality time with the two groups, which included approximately150 children, to improve their pivoting, passing, dribbling, defense and layups.
Time to "Lace 'Em Up Again" Set for Jan. 28
Calling all former basketball players!!!
The 9th Annual Alumni Basketball Game, also
known as the time to “Lace ‘Em Up Again,” will be
held on Saturday, January 28, in the afternoon (2 pm) prior the
Bulldogs’ game with Furman (7:05 tipoff).
This is the time to join many former Citadel basketball players
(spanning several decades) in the special game that features the
common bond of playing hoops for the Bulldogs in McAlister Field
House. The Alumni Game participants will be introduced at the
Furman game.
And, of course, the true goal of the Alumni Game is for veteran Director of Sports Medicine Andy Clawson to simply sit and watch, and not work.
For information, please contact Associate Athletics Director Andy Solomon at andy.solomon@citadel.edu or at 843/953-6300.

WVA game, also on the road, when the Bulldogs won, 75-73.
These games have been converted to CDs and they are now available
for purchase for $25 each. To order, please send a check
payable to John Daye and mail it to Mr. Daye at 127 Dutch Oaks

Hot Stove Banquet to Feature John Smoltz
Last year’s Hot Stove Banquet that featured recently-retired Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox got so big that the site had to be changed to accommodate all those that wanted to attend.
This year, it could even be larger because John Smoltz, the future Hall of Fame pitcher who spent two decades with the Braves, will serve as the guest speaker for the 8th annual banquet.
The event, which will be held on Friday, January 27 at The Crystal Ballroom at the Charleston Marriott on Lockwood Blvd., is being sponsored for the fifth consecutive year by Tom McQueeney State Farm Insurance and for the first time by Bennett Hospitality.
The reception begins at 6 pm with the dinner starting at 7 o’clock. Tickets are $65 per person and include dinner and beverages. Tables with preferred seating for eight (or 10) individuals are available for $500.
During his illustrious career, Smoltz was an All-Star eight times and was a member of the 1995 World Series team. He captured the 1996 National League Cy Young Award and was the 1992 NLCS most valuable player. Smoltz was the 2002 NL Rolaids Relief Man of the Year and in 2005 he received the Roberto Clemente Award and the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award. Two years later, brought home the Branch Rickey Award.
For individual tickets, please contact the
RiverDogs at (843) 577-DOGS (3647). Tickets may also be
purchased online at www.riverdogs.com.
