SoCon Spring Academic All-Conference Team Features 20 Bulldogs

2011 Spring Academic All-Conference Team

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Citadel placed 20 cadet-student-athletes on the Southern Conference’s Spring Academic All-Conference Team released on Thursday.

Baseball garnered the most cadet-student-athletes with seven as Nick Orvin, Grant Richards, Matt Talley, Justin Mackert, Matt Simonelli, Josh Pless and Legare Jones all were honored. The Citadel had the second most baseball players honored in the league, behind only Wofford’s 12 honorees.

The top Bulldog athlete was tennis’ Josh Cook, who came in with a stellar GPA of 3.94. Teammate David Orces was also honored as well as golf’s Alanna-Jean Keith. Christopher Castagno, P.J. Wasilchak, Parker Gaston, John Gatewood and William Norris all came in under men’s track and field while Natalie Wolin, Micah Wessinger, Erinn Carter, Whitney Nave and Sarah Stierwalt were featured in women’s track and field.

A total of 326 student-athletes, a record number for the spring season, were named to the conference team. Among the 326 student-athletes were at least 20 representatives from each of the 12 SoCon institutions, participating in baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field and men’s and women’s tennis. The group recorded a combined 3.57 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the spring season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the recently-concluded spring campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.

The women’s outdoor track and field programs supplied the greatest number of honorees in the league with 92, followed by baseball with 60 and men’s outdoor track and field with 45.
