Opening Kickoff!

The football-playing Bulldogs take to the road for the first time this season as they trek to the Tar Heel State to face Elon University in a 1:30 pm kickoff.  The Cadets enjoyed last week’s open date, which gave many the chance to heal early-season bruises.

If you can’t make the game, be sure to listen to “Voice of the Bulldogs” Danny Reed and analyst Walt Nadzak on The Citadel Sports Network and online at www.CitadelSports.com.

Fans that come to our upcoming home football games in October will notice something glaringly missing from the landscape – old City Gym – as workers have demolished the facility at the corner of Hagood Ave. and Fishburne Street, and have been removing the debris this week.

We’ll be watching the volleyball team as they begin Southern Conference play on Friday evening (tonight) when they travel to TD Arena to take on cross-town rival College of Charleston at 7 pm.  Soccer hosts two league rivals this weekend as Western Carolina comes here on Friday (today) and Appalachian State on Sunday.

As you’ve come to expect, we have another packed issue of news and notes, so enjoy and Go Bulldogs!!!

Football to Face Elon Tomorrow at 1:30

The Citadel and Elon meet for the 11th time in the programs’ history on Saturday, with this installment taking place at Rhodes Stadium.  The Bulldogs enter the game with a 1-1 mark (0-1, SoCon) while the Phoenix of first-year coach Jason Swepson enters with a 2-1 mark and face the Cadets as their first SoCon opponent of the season.  Last week, Elon defeated NC Central, 23-22, while the Bulldogs enjoyed an open date.

The series between the two dates to 1954 when the teams competed against each other for two straight seasons.  The series did not resume until Oct. 4, 2003, the year Elon joined the league.  The Bulldogs lead the series, 6-4; however, the Phoenix claimed the last three matchups, including a 43-7 Citadel loss in Elon in ’09.  The teams have met at Rhodes Stadium on three occasions in which The Citadel has won only once, a 44-7 victory on Nov. 18, 2006.

Of note, The Citadel has won the game following a bye week the last four seasons, and we hope it continues.

Soccer Bows to CSU, Presbyterian

The soccer team amassed 33 shots -- the most on the season and second-most in program history -- but was unable to net a goal in Tuesday's 1-0 loss to Presbyterian at WLI Field.

The Bulldogs were on the attack for the entire first half, firing a season-high 23 shots in the first 45 minutes.  Sophomores Vanessa Aponte and Mariana Garcia accounted for 13 of those shots, including five of the six on goal, but were unable to finish as the first period ended in a 0-0 stalemate.  The defense allowed only four shots in the first half.

On Saturday afternoon at WLI, the Bulldogs fired a whopping 17 shots game against cross-town foe Charleston Southern, but were unable to score the equalizer as the Bulldogs were downed, 2-1.

Both teams took time to settle into the unusually cold and windy conditions as the Bulldogs kicked off their third game of the week.  The Buccaneers kept possession for most of the first period, drilling the first five shots of the game.  It wasn't until the 30th minute of play that The Citadel would have the opportunity to strike when Vanessa Aponte made the first one count as she netted her fourth goal of the year on a 20-yard rocket from the top of the box that deflected off the right post and into the goal to give the Bulldogs a quick 1-0 lead.

Volleyball Tops NC A&T; Falls to Towson, NC State and Liberty

On Saturday afternoon at the NC State Tournament in Raleigh, juniors Rachael Farrell and Kaona Mercer combined for 16 kills and 10 digs, but it wasn’t enough to turn back a Liberty University squad that completed a 25-15, 25-11 and 25-13 sweep at the N.C. State University Tournament.   Senior captain Kathryn Johnston finished with a team-high 11 digs and five kills in the loss, as The Citadel accounted 37 digs in the match.

In Saturday’s early game, the volleyball team fell to host N.C. State by scores of 25-20, 25-9 and 25-12. Leading the Cadets up front was the trio of Alexa Dahlstrom, Farrell and Mercer, who tallied five kills apiece.

Johnston, a native of Harrisonburg, N.C., put on a defensive showing in her home state with 10 digs to go along with a pair of kills.  Also with solid defensive outings were Mercer (seven kills) and Amanda Rudnik (six kills), which proved instrumental in The Citadel finishing with 30 as a unit.

Despite a record-setting performance by Mercer, who finished with 21 kills and eight digs, Towson University earned a five-set win over The Citadel (25-19, 23-25, 18-25, 25-21 and 15-7) at the N.C. State Tournament on Friday afternoon.  Mercer's 21 kills placed her alongside Rachel Sanders and Tara Stephenson for 10th most kills in a match in program history.
Mercer was joined up front by the trio of Rachael Farrell (12 kills), Kathryn Johnston (10 kills) and Cassie Uribe (10 kills). Defensively, the Cadets finished with 40 digs, highlighted by eight each from Mercer and Farrell.  Alexa Dahlstrom was the catalyst to the Bulldog offensive, totaling 51 assists, shattering her previous career-high of 28 dishes.

On Thursday in Greensboro, the volleyball team for the third time this season earned a victory by a sweep, defeating North Carolina A&T, 25-13, 25-15 and 27-25.  Mercer finished with match-high performances in kills (13) and digs (eight).  She was joined in kills by Rudnik, who posted five to go along with four digs, and Ise d'Angelo, who notched four kills and four digs.

He Said It:

"The main thing I walked away with was that I'm more and more convinced about the triple option.  Based on the type of kids that we get, and that Navy and Army get, this is the best thing for our football program."

  • Coach Kevin Higgins, confirming that the triple option is best for The Citadel, having watched Navy, Army and Georgia Tech – all triple option teams – on television during the Bulldogs’ open date on Saturday.

"He's not big enough to play strictly defensive end.  He's a hybrid, a guy who can rush the passer or drop into coverage.  So in the offseason, we started looking at ways to get our best players on the field, and that meant getting Jeremy on the field."

  • Coach Higgins, on the progress of senior linebacker Jeremy Buncom.
