Ed Conroy enters his fourth season at the helm of Bulldog Basketball. Conroy, a 1989 Citadel alum, returned to the Bulldog family in April 2006 as head coach for The Citadel Basketball program, his first Division I head coaching position.

In 2007-08, his Bulldog won 14 more games than the previous season, and finished as the most improved team in NCAA Division I. Conroy led The Citadel to its longest winning streak, 11 consecutive, since the 1926-27 season.  The Bulldogs notched a program record 15 Southern Conference victories, under SoCon Sports Media Association Coach of the Year  and SoCon Coaches Coach of the Year.  This feat put Conroy in rare company, becoming the first Citadel head coach to be named Coach of the Year by both the media and coaches since Randy Nesbit in 1989.

He directed The Citadel to its second 20-win season in program history and first since Les Robinson (1978-79). During the history-making season, he snapped several program marks, including a 17-game losing streak to Appalachian State that dated back to 1993. His team defeated Davidson at Belk Arena for the first time since 1990 and swept cross-town rival College of Charleston for the first time since 1993. The Bulldog success led to Conroy being recognized as Skip Prosser Man of the Year, NABC District 22 Coach of the Year and CollegeInsider.com Southern Conference Coach of the Year.

His commitment to individual player development player and instruction paid dividends for Cameron Wells, Demetrius Nelson and John Brown during 2008-09. Wells was named CollegeInsider.com Southern Conference Most Valuable Player. Additionally, he was selected to SoCon Coaches All-Conference Team and SoCon Media All-Conference Second Team. Teammate Demetrius Nelson capped his career as the ninth all-time leading scorer in Citadel history (1,264 pts.) and a spot as CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major All-American. Nelson was also named  SoCon Coaches All-Conference Team Selection and SoCon Media All-Conference First Team Selection. Freshman John Brown, who converted 58.8% of his field goals, was recognized as CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Freshmen All-American and SoCon Coaches All-Freshman Team member.

Conroy also puts a major emphasis on academic success, as several Bulldog players were recognized for their academic achievements. Senior Jonathan Brick was recognized for his 2007-08 All-Southern Conference Academic Team selection, while also being commended on his gold star honors. Brick was also recognized as The Society of Cincinnati Award winner. The Society of the Cincinnati Medal is awarded annually to the senior cadet officer who best exemplifies the citizen-solider characteristics of Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a Roman farmer. Sophomore Phillip Pandak was also acknowledged for gold star honors. Zach Beach, Cosmo Morabbi, Tom Fitzpatrick and Matt Roberts were recognized for Dean's List accolades.

In 2007-08, Conroy coached two freshmen to conference honors. Freshman guard Cameron Wells was named SoCon Coaches Freshman of the Year and SCSMA Freshman of the Year. Wells was also selected to the SoCon Coaches All-Freshman Team, the SCSMA All-Freshman Team and the CollegeHoops.net Mid-Major Honorable Mention All-Freshman Team. Freshman guard Austin Dahn was also selected to the SoCon Coaches All-Freshman Team. Conroy continued to strengthen the schedule, taking the Bulldogs on the road to South Carolina, Penn and Washington State, while hosting Southern California at home at McAlister Field House.

Conroy's emphasis on skill development was reflected in his 2007-08 team's national rankings. They finished in the top-10 among NCAA Division I institutions in three-point field goals per game, ranked eighth. The Bulldogs were ranked 34th in turnovers per game among NCAA Division I schools and led the Southern Conference in three-point field goals made and three-point field goal percentage in conference play.

Conroy returned to The Citadel after one season as an assistant coach at Coastal Carolina University under Buzz Peterson. In his first year with CCU, the Chanticleers went 20-10 overall and 12-4 in the Big South Conference. Coastal finished the season second in the Big South Conference after making their first appearance in the Big South championship game since defeating Winthrop in 1993.

In his first year back, Conroy increased The Citadel's strength of schedule 10-fold, taking the Bulldogs on the road to Iowa, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Southern Cal and West Virginia, while hosting South Carolina at home at McAlister Field House. Conroy led the Bulldogs to wins over Elon and Georgia Southern, the 2006 north and south division champions, while also claiming their first January conference road win in two years. The Conroy-led Bulldogs' 300 percent improvement in conference wins was third in the country among first-year head coaches, while Hoop Scoop Online ranked his fall signing class No. 1 in the Southern Conference.

Conroy joined Coastal after spending four years on Peterson's staff at Tennessee, the last two as an assistant. Prior to being named an assistant coach, Conroy served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Volunteers during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons after holding the same position on Peterson's staff at the University of Tulsa in 2000-01.

Prior to joining Peterson's staff at Tulsa, Conroy spent three years as the head coach at Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C. In three seasons at Francis Marion, Conroy recorded a 41-40 overall record. In his first season at Francis Marion he led the Patriots to a 16-11 record, which was an improvement of 13 wins from the previous season and ranked as the biggest turnaround in NCAA Divisions I and II that year. Picked to finish last in the Peach Belt Conference that season, the Patriots finished second. His team's accomplishments netted Conroy the 1998 conference coach of the year honors.

Before taking over the head coaching reins at Francis Marion, Conroy spent three years (1994-97) as an assistant coach at Furman and one year (1993-94) at Virginia Military Institute. He also spent three years (1990-93) on Les Robinson's North Carolina State coaching staff that also included Peterson and Al Daniel.

A native of Davenport, Iowa, Conroy, 41, was recruited to play basketball for The Citadel by Robinson in 1985 and was a three-year starter for the Bulldogs. He is tied for tenth in The Citadel record book for his free throw percentage in a season (84.7 in 1988) and the No. 7 spot for free throw percentage in a career with 81.5. During his senior season, Conroy started all 28 games and averaged 10.1 points a game. He converted 103 three-point field goals in his career. As a senior, Conroy also served as team captain and held the rank of Lt. Colonel in the Corps of Cadets, the highest rank achieved by a basketball player in the modern era at The Citadel.  After graduating from the military school in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in business administration, Conroy worked at IBM before earning his first coaching job as an assistant to Robinson at North Carolina State.

Conroy is the 27th head basketball coach all-time at The Citadel. He and his wife Ginny have three children, Riley (13), Hunt (11) and Hannah (8).
