Opening Kickoff!

Last week's overtime football game against nationally ranked Appalachian State was a "coulda-shoulda" type of contest, but the Bulldogs certainly gave their all and left nothing behind.  But as the ol' coach says, "That was last week."

Now Coach Kevin Higgins' troops march in North Carolina and will battle Saturday against another nationally ranked team in Elon.  Here's hoping that the loss to App State turns into a victory over the Phoenix.

All of our falls sports are in season with basketball and wrestling eager to start next month.

In today's issue, "Voice of the Bulldogs" Darren Goldwater continues his weekly column and there's plenty of news and notes, so let's get to it and Go Bulldogs!!!

Bulldogs Take App State into Overtime

The Citadel suffered a tough overtime loss to No. 10 Appalachian State in the Bulldogs' conference opener on Saturday before a crowd of 14,238 at Johnson Hagood Stadium.  The Citadel and ASU were tied at 27-27 at the end of regulation and the Bulldogs lost in overtime, 30-27.

The Citadel totaled 373 yards of offense, 214 on the ground.  Bart Blanchard finished the game completing 11-of-20 passes with no interceptions and two touchdowns.  Van Dyke Jones led the rushing game with four carries for 81 yards, while backup quarterback Miguel Starks totaled 14 rushes for 48 yards.  Andre Roberts was limited to six catches for 47 yards and two rushes for 25 yards.  The defense was again led by Jordon Gilmore and Dewitt Jones, who totaled 13 and 10 tackles, respectively.

Citadel - Elon Football History

The Citadel faces Elon for just the ninth time as the series dates to 1954 when the teams competed for two straight years.  However, the battles didn't resume until Oct. 4, 2003 - the year Elon joined the Southern Conference.  The Bulldogs lead the overall series, 6-2; however, the Phoenix claimed the victory in the last meeting, 27-23, on Oct. 11 at Johnson Hagood Stadium.  The win marked the Phoenix first defeat of The Citadel since joining the league.  The teams have met twice in Elon with the schools splitting the games.

Watch for the Game Within A Game

Saturday's matchup with Elon includes a game within a game as two of the nation's top two receivers in Andre Roberts and the Phoenix's Terrell Hudgins will play.  Both seniors, the duo have been flip-flopping for the top spot in receiving categories for the past couple of seasons.  This season, however, Hudgins has a significant lead over Roberts as they hold spots in the top three in career receiving records in the league.  Last weekend, Hudgins broke the NCAA record for career receptions (previously 317) with a total of 331.  Roberts is second all-time in the SoCon in career receptions with 239.  Hudgins is No. 1 in the SoCon in career receiving yards with 4,367, while Roberts is third with 3,268 yards.  In receiving touchdowns, Hudgins again has the lead with 42 while Roberts is second all time with 33.

Van Dyke Jones Earns SoCon Freshman of the Week Citation

Running back Van Dyke Jones was named Southern Conference Freshman Player of the Week after his 100-yard performance on Saturday against No. 10 Appalachian State at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

After suffering major blows at the running back position, Jones brought the running game back to life, recording four carries for 81 yards against the Mountaineers.  The
highlight of the game was his 69-yard touchdown run to regain the lead, 20-17, early in the fourth quarter.  The Bulldogs, who eventually lost to ASU in overtime, 30-27, totaled 214 rushing yards.

The Citadel has had three players of the week thus far in the season.  Redshirt freshman defensive back Joseph Boateng earned defensive player of the week for his impressive collegiate debut at No. 21 North Carolina and redshirt junior quarterback Bart Blanchard received co-offensive player of the week for his record-setting performance against Presbyterian.

From the Press Box with Darren Goldwater

There's no such thing as a "moral victory," it's one of the most overused clichés in sports. Find me a single team in any sport that refers to a loss that way, and I'll find you a team that won't have a lot of actual victories. A "moral victory" implies the team actually won the game in the minds of the players and coaches. In other words, it  implies satisfaction in the outcome.

After Saturday's loss to Appalachian State, The Citadel has taken a much different approach. Make no mistake about it, this team is not satisfied with a loss to the preseason number one team in the nation. The players played their hearts out and fought as hard as any team I've seen in my short time here, but fell short. It wasn't a moral victory in any sense, but it did instill confidence in the future.

As well as the team played, I think there are a lot of people who would tell you they could have played even better...now that's saying something.  If the Bulldogs could come that close to beating a team riding a 13-game conference winning streak without playing their best, you've got to like their chances the rest of the way through the schedule, starting Saturday at Elon.

This Elon team is likely better than last year's. Its defense boasts a league hi 19 sacks and is top-5 nationally in virtually all major categories. The Phoenix offense is led by the NCAA all-time receptions leader, Terrell Hudgins, and the SoCon's all-time leading passer, junior Scott Riddle. Playing this team on the road might realistically be more of a challenge than facing the Mountaineers at home, but the Bulldogs will head to Elon as a confident group.

There's no telling how much of a hangover effect last week's game will have on Saturday's matchup, but the players and coaches have sure said all the right things this week. They've talked about the improved leadership, about using last week as motivation and knowing they can play with the best this league has to offer. Saturday they'll get another crack at it.

For more coverage of Saturday's game log onto www.THEcitadelsportsnetwork.com. There you'll find daily interviews, highlights, previews, recaps and so much more. We're on the air on our statewide network Saturday at noon for the 1:30 kickoff. Talk to you then!

Win A Trip to Hawaii With The Bulldogs

The baseball team travels to Honolulu, Hawaii this March 1-7 to play a four-game series with the University of Hawaii.  This is a great opportunity for these young men as they will also get to tour the island of Oahu, visit Pearl Harbor and enjoy a Luau.  While this will be an incredible experience for the ballplayers, it does not come without great expense.  To help defray the costs of airfare, hotels, meals, ground transportation and other necessary costs, the team is holding a raffle.  The winner receives a trip for two with the ballclub and included airfare, six nights of accommodations, ground transportation, two Pearl Harbor tickets, two Luau tickets and game tickets for all four games. If you are interested in securing tickets (a $10 donation) please contact  assistant coach Randy Carlson at 843-953-7265 or randy.carlson@citadel.edu.

They Said It:

"We are conceding goals that should be defendable."

  • Soccer coach Bob Winch, after Wofford shutout The Citadel, 4-0, on Sunday.

"We were in a dogfight."

  • Appalachian State's All-America quarterback Armanti Edwards, after Saturday's overtime game.

"It hurts.  We played the way we wanted to play, we got the game into the fourth quarter and still ended up with a loss.  Just knowing we had a chance to beat those guys, it's really tough."

  • All-American wide receiver Andre Roberts, on the Appalachian State game.

"Does Miguel throw some of the tows as well as Bart?  No, but that's coming with time.  And there are things he does well that Bart doesn't do.  We feel good about both of them."

  • Coach Kevin Higgins, on the dual-quarterback system of Bart Blanchard and Miguel Starks.
