All of our fall sports are underway (see our updates below), and the football team has an extra week of healing and preparation before traveling to Princeton next Friday for Saturday's 3 pm kickoff.

A new weekly column begins next week as "Voice of the Bulldogs" Darren Goldwater will chime in with his views and perspectives from the press box.  Stay tuned for his unique insights.

As you've come to expect we continue to have another packed issue of Today's Blue & White, so let's get to it and Go Bulldogs!!!

Tar Heels Route Bulldogs in Football Opener; Have An Open Week on Saturday

Quarterback T.J. Yates threw two touchdown passes in the decisive first half and No. 21 North Carolina routed The Citadel, 40-6, on Saturday night at Kenan Stadium.

Ryan Houston had touchdown runs of 5 and 3 yards, and Shaun Draughn rushed for 118 yards while helping the Tar Heels roll up 375 yards total offense.  They had a 261-30 advantage on the ground.

North Carolina played their first opener as a ranked team since they were No. 12 in 1998, and were upset 13-10 by Miami of Ohio. This one was nowhere near that close, after a second quarter in which North Carolina scored on four straight possessions.

The halftime stat sheet was all Tar Heels as they led 23-0, outgained the Bulldogs, 204-73, held a 108-16 advantage in yards rushing and forced four turnovers.

The Bulldogs enjoy an off-week before preparing for the Princeton game on Sept. 19.

Boateng Named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week

Redshirt freshman defensive back Joseph Boateng earned Southern Conference defensive player of the week honors for his impressive college debut against the No. 21 North Carolina Tar Heels in the season-opener.

Boateng, a transfer from Eastern Michigan, entered the game early in the first quarter for an injured Rod Harland who left the game with a concussion.  Boateng quickly made an impact recording the first UNC turnover of the game when he intercepted a pass and returned it 18 yards to the UNC 3-yard line at the end of the second quarter.  Boateng recorded a second interception in the fourth quarter and returned it for two yards.

The 5-10, 180-pounder from Germantown, Md., led the defensive effort with five
solo and two assisted tackles with two interceptions with 20 return yards.

For the second consecutive season, the Bulldogs have earned a SoCon Player of the Week recognition for opening weekend.  In 2008, freshman running back Asheton Jordan and All-America wide receiver Andre Roberts received two of the four SoCon weekly honors.

The soccer team fell at Gardner-Webb, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in Boiling
Springs, NC.  Though the score didn't represent a tight match, Gardner-Webb outshot The Citadel, 9-7.

On Wednesday at WLI Field, Charleston Southern nipped The Citadel, 2-1. Dianna Martin tied the score with about 33 minutes remaining in the match  but the Bucs scored five minutes later for the game-winner.

Charleston Southern outshot The Citadel, 24-9, and Whitney Nave recorded four saves.

Volleyball Drops Three Matches at USC-Upstate; Jestila Named to All-Tournament Team; Falls in Home Opener

The volleyball team dropped a pair of games on Friday in Spartanburg at the USC Upstate Volleyball Classic.  The Bulldogs opened the day falling to North Carolina State 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, and 25-21) and in the nightcap, the Cadets fell to host USC Upstate 3-2 (12-25, 25-22, 21-25, 30-28, 15-17).

Against NC State Tatum Jestila led the Cadets as she recorded 12 kills on 29 total attacks to go along with eight digs and a service ace. Against USC Upstate, three Citadel players recorded double-double outings and included Jestila (18 kills, 15 digs), Jessica Maas (14 kills, 14 digs) and Jessica Maxwell (12 kills and 10 digs; first career double-double). Alyssa Holum added a career-high 49 assists.

On Saturday UNC Asheville swept The Citadel, 3-0, as the Bulldogs could not equal the intensity of the match with UNCA last weekend in Raleigh when they fell in a grind-it-out five set match.  In this meeting, Asheville controlled the match from start to finish, winning in three sets (25-17, 25-18 and 25-19).  Jestila again led the team in kills with 10 and also recorded eight digs while Holum tallied 28 assists to go along with a team-high 10 digs.

For her efforts, Jestila was named to the all-tournament team for the second straight week.  The Arizona native tallied 40 kills, 31 digs and three service aces in three games, playing in all 11 sets.

On Tuesday in the home opener, The Citadel lost, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19 and 25-7), to Charleston Southern in McAlister Field House.  The Bulldogs were led by junior middle blocker Jessica Maas who totaled nine kills.

Highlighting the larger tournaments, the Cadets take part in the NC State Open, the Penn State Open, the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C. and the All-Academy Championships in Annapolis, Md.

Matt Crim Leads Team to Championship

On the strength Matt Crim's four-hit complete game shutout, the Danville Braves won the 2009 Appalachian League title with a 5-0 win over the Elizabethton Twins in Game 2 of the Championship Series in front of 1,241 screaming fans at Dan Daniel Memorial Park on September 3 in Danville, VA.  It was the Braves' second-ever title and their first since 2006, capping a season in which they won 47 regular season games and led the East Division for all but three days.

Crim, who graduated in May, surrendered just four hits over his nine dazzling innings. He walked one and struck out five in the championship performance and, at one point, the left-hander retired 11 in a row.

Nemo Added to NY Giants Practice Squad

The New York Giants announced this week that they have signed Nehemiah "Nemo" Broughton to their practice squad roster.  The fullback who is from North Charleston was one of six players who the Giants added.

Nemo was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the seventh round of the 2005 NFL Draft.  He had also been a member of the Carolina Panthers and Minnesota Vikings.

And Finally¿

Today's Blue & White offers a "tip of the cap" to Col. Tom McQueeney '74, who will be recognized with the prestigious Order of the Palmetto in recognition of his service to the community and state at today's (Friday) 3:45 pm dress parade.

McQueeney has served on a number of community boards including The Citadel Foundation and The Citadel Board of Visitors and given thousands of dollars to charity.  McQueeney is also a member of The Citadel Brigadier Memorial Fund Board and served as chairman of the new Johnson Hagood Stadium revitalization project, a multi-million dollar joint-use project with the S.C. National Guard.

But his community service extends beyond The Citadel.  He started a statewide program for the Red Cross, distributing teddy bears to children of disaster victims.  He was involved in fundraising for the Ronald McDonald House and Our Lady of Mercy Outreach.  When Hurricane Hugo hit in 1989 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005, McQueeney loaded his RV with supplies and just started helping people.

Congratulations, Col. McQueeney!

They Said It:

"The girls competed and worked the entire 90 minutes.  It was a tight game shot-wise, but in the effort to become more offensive, we moved some players around.  The team did very well."

  • Soccer coach Bob Winch, after The Citadel fell at Gardner-Webb, 3-0.

"We had a six point lead in the second set, but they rallied for the win. The same held true in the third set as we went up 5-1 early, but UNCA fought hard and took the lead from us.  Our defense struggled (Saturday).  I thought our offense kept us in the match.  We saw three strong opponents this weekend, but we can't let these losses slow us down."

  • Volleyball coach Carolyn Geiger, after falling to UNC Asheville in the USC-Upstate Tournament.

"I thought that in that first half that our defense really stepped up and did a nice job stuffing third down conversions.  They did a great job in the first half.  I thought that they were on the field too long and they got worn down, and that was obvious to see as North Carolina pounded the ball and we were a little bit sloppy tackling.  I thought that those guys came and really did a nice job shutting down some things that North Carolina was trying to do.  Certainly the interceptions and turnovers hurt us on offense in the first half.

"We did have two picks; that was encouraging to see.  Our special teams caused two turnovers; we had the two field goals (kicker) Sam (Keeler), which was a positive.  I think what we¹ve got to do now is draw upon the things we did well, make sure we recognize what those things are, and figure out the things that we didn¹t do real well, work hard on those here in the next two weeks before Princeton, and continue to get better as a football team.  I told our guys in the locker room that was a very good football team we played against.  It was a top-10 type of defense, and we¹ll have a chance to get much better here if we continue to work in the next two weeks."

  • Coach Kevin Higgins' opening comments at his press conference after the North Carolina game.

"They (The Citadel) just did a great job of creating turnovers and handling some sudden change situations."

  • North Carolina coach Butch Davis.

"We've got to accentuate the positives and get back to fundamentals.  And we've got to improve the things that were glaring problems for us and hope we're a better team when we go to Princeton."

  • Coach Higgins.

"I am very pleased that we will be opening with N.C State during homecoming.  The dual and The Citadel Open together will make for an exciting homecoming weekend.   Between the two, most of the roster will be able to get in some good competition.  The ACC picked up a lot of NCAA qualifiers last year so it is important for us to see them.  Two of the last three duals are against ACC schools and at home.  I am very happy with this schedule and I am pleased with how the home schedule came together."

  • Wrestling coach Rob Hjerling, on the Bulldogs' 2009-10 schedule.
