NEW YORK – The Citadel’s Wes Wrenn became the fourth cadet-student-athlete from The Citadel drafted in the 2009 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft as the New York Mets selected the Class of 2009 right-handed pitcher in the 35th round with the 1,064th overall pick. The four Bulldogs selected in the draft marks the most selections The Citadel has ever had in a single year.
Wrenn, named the 2009 Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year, recorded a 9-3 record and a 4.19 ERA this past season, leading The Citadel to a third-place finish in the Southern Conference. His nine victories ranks him 23rd in the nation in wins.
Wrenn holds The Citadel’s career records in games started and innings pitched and is tied for third in the school’s career win chart with Matt Crim.
The fourth player selected in the 2009 MLB Draft, Wrenn joins Richard Jones (ninth round, Chicago Cubs), Chris McGuiness (13th round, Boston Red Sox) and Matt Crim (21st round, Atlanta Braves) in being drafted.
Wrenn’s selection makes 2009 the most successful year in school history for The Citadel in the MLB Draft. The Bulldogs had three cadet-student-athletes drafted in the 2001 draft.
