ELON, N.C. - Cameron Wells registered his third double-double of the season to lead The Citadel basketball team to their fourth straight victory, 77-72, at Alumni Gym on the campus of Elon University. Wells, who finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds, was joined in scoring by teammates Harrison DuPont (18 pts.) and Austin Dahn (16 pts.). With the victory the Bulldogs improve to 14-12 overall, 8-6 in Southern Conference action. It also means that 34 victories over a two-year stretch ties Head Coach Ed Conroy for most in Citadel history along with Les Robinson (78-80).

Dahn sparked The Citadel's second half comeback with 16 points, hitting 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. His five treys set a season-high and are the most since a Dec. 17, 2008 battle with Michigan State. As for the freshman DuPont, who established a new career-high, he registered consecutive double-digit contests for the second time this season. Wells moved within two points of Tom Slawson's fourth place spot on the all-time scoring list. Slawson amassed 1,408 points during his career in a Bulldogs uniform. The tandem of Wells and Zach Urbanus finished with four assists each, giving The Citadel a 13-12 edge as a team.

"Austin (Dahn) made us extremely hard to guard in the second half," added Head Coach Ed Conroy. "I am sure that our point per possession, in the second half, is as high as it's been all year. He managed to be in the right spots and was knocking down those shots to make us difficult to match up with on a defensive end in the second half."

Trailing 31-28 at the half, Dahn converted his second 3-pointer to keep the Bulldogs within three at the 15:19 mark of the second half. After four straight points by Adam Constantine, the Phoenix stretched the lead to 46-39, before Dahn answered with another trey.

The game went through a series of ties, the last coming at 52-52 on a DuPont jumper. It sparked a Citadel 17-4 run over the next 5:34 to open up a 69-56 advantage. Wells scored six points during the stretch, along with three from Urbanus, to provide the biggest lead of the game.

Chris Long scored Elon's next five points to keep the Phoenix within striking distance, 72-65, before The Citadel hit five free throws down the stretch to make for the 77-72 final. The loss is the second in as many games for Elon, moving them to 6-19 overall, 4-10 in SoCon action.

Constantine led all scorers with 24 points along with 15 caroms, while teammate Drew Spradlin tallied 18 points. Spradlin scored 10 of his 18 points in the second half, hitting 2-of-5 from 3-point range. Long rounded out double figure scorers with 10 points and had a game-high six assists.

The Bulldogs finished off the game with a 25-of-47 (53.2%) shooting performance, marking the second straight game in which they have eclipsed the 50% mark. They also closed with a 36-33 advantage on the boards, including seven on the offensive glass.

The Citadel got back on track after Elon scored the game's first eight points, behind three points by Bryan Streeter by the 12:19 mark, narrowing the gap to 14-7.

After the Phoenix built a 10-point advantage, on two occasions, four points from Wells and a pair from DuPont and Streeter cut the lead to 23-21 with 5:28 remaining in the half. Elon answered with a 8-2 run over the next 5:08, assuming a 31-25 lead, before Urbanus closed out first half scoring with a 3-pointer as time expired.

DuPont's shared a game-high eight points, along with Constantine and Spradlin of the Phoenix, as the Bulldogs converted 10-of-23 (43.5%) from the field. The Citadel was successful on 7-of-8 free throws. Elon managed 13-of-28 (46.4%) in the opening frame, knocking down 4-of-12 (33.3%) attempts from beyond the arc.

The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday, Feb. 18 when they host Western Carolina at McAlister Field House. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. Halftime festivities will feature the College of Charleston Dance Team.
