Wrestling Falls to NC State, 21-18

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel fell to NC State on Saturday to open the 2009-2010 season, 21-18. The Bulldogs hosted their first of three ACC opponents that will visit McAlister Field House this season.

Defending SoCon Champion and NCAA qualifier Odie Delaney started off the dual at the 197-pound weight class. Delaney started with a quick two-point take down and led 2-0 after one period. Delaney started down in the second period, but quickly escaped and reversed on Christian McClean and pinned him early in the second period to quickly put The Citadel up 6-0.

Bobby Isola jumped early on Ivan Muller in the Heavyweight bout with a 2-0 takedown. Muller earned an escape, cutting the lead to 2-1 to end period one. Isola escaped to earn the only point of the second period, going up 3-1. In the third period, Muller earned an escape point, but could not down Isola as NC State won at heavyweight to cut into the team lead to 6-3.

Rolling over the lineup at 125, Richard Alarcon earned a two-point takedown 30 second in to the match. Cummings escaped to trim the lead 2-1 and followed with a couple of two point takedowns to go up 5-2 after one. In the second, Alarcon started on top and Taylor Cummings quickly escaped, opening his lead to 6-2. Alarcon turned the tables with a two-point takedown, followed by an escape from Cummings making the score 7-4 for the NC State grappler which would be the final score after an uneventful third period. NC State tied up the match at 6-6.

NCAA qualifier Dairrus Little from NC State earned a two-point takedown at the end of the first period over true freshman Jordan Dix. Little started on top to start the second, but Dix earned an escape, cutting the lead to 2-1. Little got a two-point takedown with ten second to go in the first to go up 4-1 after one period. Little got the escape followed by a two-point takedown to start the second. Little increased his lead and won the match, 9-3. NC State would take the lead for the first time in the dual, 9-6.

Dale Shull of NC State earned a quick two-point take down on Nick LaFevre at 141, to take a 2-0 lead after one. LaFevre started on top in the second and rode out the period with Shull earning an illegal hold point to go up 3-0. The third period featured a scoreless affair with the match ending at 3-0 and NC State moving up 12-6 in the dual.

Colton Palmer for the Wolfpack jumped out of the gate with a quick two-point takedown on Pierre Frazile at 149 that followed by an injury timeout for Frazile that would result in him exiting the match with a quad injury. By default, NC State would increase their lead to 18-6 in the dual.

At 157, Bobby Ward of NC State earned a two-point takedown in the first period. True freshman Turtogtokh Luvsandorj earned an escape, cutting the lead to 2-1. Ward would follow with another two-point takedown, followed by another escape for Luvsandorj. Ward started on top in the second, with Luvsandorj earning two escapes to tie the match at four. In the third, Ward earned an escape point and would win the match 6-4 with riding time. The Wolfpack increased their dual lead to 21-6.

Derek Sickel took a two-point takedown on Kasey Young at 165 to take a 2-0 lead after one. Young started on top in the second, but Sickel earned a quick escape increasing his lead to 3-0. Young followed with a two-point takedown that Sickel would escape from, making the score 4-2. Young earned another two-point takedown just before the second period ended to tie the match at four. In the third period, Sickel would earn a two-point takedown and win the match with riding time, 7-4. The Citadel cut into the Wolfpack lead, 21-9.

At 174, J.C. Oddo earned a two-point takedown on NC State's Quinton Godley in the first period en route to a 5-1 decision cutting the NC State overall lead to 21-12.

In the final match of the dual at 184, The Citadel's Kelby Smith got past John Becker via injury default. Becker left in the third period and The Citadel would be earn six points to the team score to finish just short as NC State would win 21-18.
