Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel women’s team recorded their second runner-up finish in four years and the Bulldog men’s team finished third at the challenging 28th Annual Citadel Invitational at James Island County Park on Saturday morning. Katheryn Gatewood led the women and Brendan Kight led the men for the third meet this season.
Gatewood’s 13th place finish led the women’s team as she ran 20:15 in the 5k race. The junior from El Paso, Texas has led the Bulldog women in all of the team’s races this season. Junior Natalie Wolin led a string of three consecutive Citadel runners to cross the finish line, placing 15th with a time of 20:23. Senior Sarah Strickland followed with a 16th place finish, running 20:26, while senior Erin Ritter placed 17th with a time of 20:55.
The women’s team dominated most of the competition, finishing second with 62 team points. That mark beat South Carolina State’s third place team score of 109. Furman won the women’s collegiate race for the seventh consecutive season, accumulating 15 points as Paladin runners finished in seven of the top eight spots.
Kight, a junior from Sumter, S.C., once again paced the men’s team as he finished 11th in the 8k race with a time of 27:58. Sophomore Zach Yereb ran an inspired 28:19 to finish 14th, his best finish of the season. Senior Zach Johnson placed 17th as he ran 28:28 while freshman Chris Morgan set a personal record with a time of 28:44, placing 20th. Freshman P.J. Wasilchak placed 22nd with a time of 28:57.
The men’s team finished third, falling only eight points short of cross-town rival College of Charleston. Furman won the men’s race for the sixth time in seven years. Charleston Southern placed fourth in the men’s race.
The Citadel returns to action on Friday, Oct. 3 when the Bulldogs compete in the FLrunners.com Invitational presented by Nike in Titusville, Fla.
