Tom Culler to Be Recognized with SoCon Distinguished Service Award
He’s easily recognized with his trademark black hat, large belt buckle, solid gray goatee and an ear-to-ear smile.
Tom Culler '50, truly one of the most energetic of all Citadel fans, will be honored with the 2012 Southern Conference Distinguished Service Award.
The citation, inaugurated in 2002 by then-Commissioner Danny Morrison, is a way for the league to recognize individuals from its member institutions who have contributed to all aspects of the university. The award will be presented on May 30 during the league’s Honors Dinner in Asheville, N.C.
Though Culler, a native of Tampa, Fla., who currently lives in Cameron, S.C., never played in a Citadel athletic contest or played a musical instrument, he is always seen around both.
Not too long after he graduated in
1950, Culler realized how much intercollegiate athletics and the
college’s Regimental Band contributed to the rhythm of life
at The Citadel. He consistently expresses his appreciation by
making it possible for worthy student-athletes and
musically-inclined students alike to have the benefit of a Citadel
“Tom has clearly earned the highest respect of his fellow alumni in all of his endeavors and accomplishments,” said Associate Athletics Director/Development John McAleer. “His actions have been in keeping with the finest traditions of The Citadel, and we’re thrilled that he’ll be recognized by the Southern Conference for his many contributions.”
For his efforts, affinity for his alma mater and for his generous contributions to The Citadel Brigadier Foundation and The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes, Culler was recognized in 2006 as The Citadel’s Alumnus of the Year.
Culler is a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association and a long-time supporter of The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. He is a veteran of World War II, retired attorney and banker and has worked tirelessly to support the Regimental Band and Pipes, Summerall Guards and Palmetto Battery - all campus groups.
Major Herb Day, the late director of the Regimental Band, penned a composition that was debuted on Parents' Weekend in October of 2005. The rousing tune, called Stalwart Friend, was written in honor of Culler, who had established the Thomas R. Culler Band Scholarship.
