Jackson and Pritcher Earn the Eighth-Best Citadel Moment of 2012-13 After Being Taken in MLB Draft

The eighth-best moment in Citadel athletics for 2012-13 goes to Joe Jackson and Austin Pritcher of the baseball team.

Jackson and Pritcher became the latest Bulldogs selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft, with Jackson going to the Texas Rangers in the fifth round and Pritcher chosen by the Detroit Tigers in the 19th.

Jackson climbed the draft ranks during an outstanding junior season, becoming the highest position player taken from The Citadel since Dallas McPherson was picked in the second round by the Anaheim Angels in 2001. The catcher was the first position player to go from the Bulldog roster to professional baseball since fellow backstop Bryan Altman in 2010.

Jackson, the MVP of the SoCon tournament and an All-American, is beginning his minor league career with the Spokane Indians of the Northwest League.

Pritcher was the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year, winning eight games and ranking third in the league in ERA. When he was taken by the Tigers it marked the ninth time in Fred Jordan’s 22 seasons as head coach at The Citadel that at least two players were selected in the same draft.

Pritcher, a local product from James Island High School, is currently a member of the Connecticut Tigers of the New York-Penn League.
