CHARLESTON, S.C. - Zach Urbanus scored 17 points, all in the second half, to keep The Citadel undefeated all-time at Carolina First Arena with a 72-65 toppling of intercity rival College of Charleston. Urbanus, who finished 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, was joined on the offensive end by Cameron Wells and Harrison DuPont who added 15 points apiece. DuPont added six rebounds to lead the way for the 'Dogs, who have now won three straight games in Southern Conference action. The Citadel improves to 13-12 overall and 7-6 in league play.
"I just loved Zach's aggressiveness," Head Coach Ed Conroy said of the junior guard. "He just keeps working hard and continually gets better in practice everyday. He has worked on making himself better over the last few weeks. To see him come out after going into the gym and working on different points of his game like he did tonight is what it is all about."
The Citadel converted 18-of-32 shots (56.3%) in the second half, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. It led to a 30-for-59 (50.8%) shooting performance in the game, marking the first time since a meeting with Maryland-Eastern Shore (57.4%; Nov. 22) that the team has hit better than half of its field goals. The Bulldogs finished with a 7-of-13 (53.8%) mark from 3-point range behind the hot shooting Urbanus.
Wells finished with another strong performance that included 15 points and five caroms. He also dished out five assists and forced two steals. DuPont hit on 6-of-11 from the field, grabbed four offensive boards and helped the 'Dogs hold a 37-29 edge in rebounds. Forward Bryan Streeter and Austin Dahn chipped in five rebounds as The Citadel closed the game with a 14-11 edge in second chance points. Bo Holston added spark off the bench with a career-best eight points to go along with four rebounds.
Andrew Goudelock registered a double-double (19 points, 11 rebounds), however hit just one trey in a 9-of-21 outing. Teammates Tony White Jr. (15 points) and Jeremy Simmons (14 points) also reached double figures for the College of Charleston. After hitting 35 treys over the last two games, the Cougars were held to 6-of-23 from beyond the arc in the loss. The College of Charleston falls to 16-9 overall and 11-3 in SoCon play.
DuPont opened the second half by scoring The Citadel's first seven points. Trailing 39-34 at the 16:50 mark, an open dunk by Streeter ignited the Bulldog faithful. A pair of jumpers by Wells and Urbanus knotted the game at 40-40 just over a minute later.
The two teams traded baskets before a 47-47 tie was broken on a Wolfinger layup at the 10:47 mark. After a series of ties, Urbanus knocked down his first of two 3-pointers to give The Citadel a 58-53 lead with 6:39 remaining.
With 4:11 on the clock a Simmons jumper allowed the Cougars to grab the lead back, 61-60. The 'Dogs responded with layups by DuPont and Streeter to regain a one-point led before Urbanus sank a 3-pointer to make move the score to 67-63. After Casaan Breeden drew the margin back to two points, Urbanus sent home the dagger from beyond the arc and made for a 70-65 advantage. DuPont sank the game's final points as The Citadel picked up the 41st victory in the all-time rivalry.
The Cougars took a 31-27 lead into the half, led by Goudelock's game-high 11 points. The Citadel was led by Wells' 10 points and five rebounds, followed by Dahn's five points. The trio of DuPont, Streeter and Holston each netted four points to round out scoring. The Bulldogs converted 12-of-27 (44.4%) in the opening half with Dahn hitting the lone 3-pointer. The two teams split points in the paint, 14-14, despite a 19-10 edge in rebounding for the 'Dogs.
DuPont scored four points over the first 15:57 that established a 10-5 lead in the early going. After a trey by Willis Hall that drew the Cougars within two points, The Citadel answered with a 9-2 run over the next 5:06 of the game. Key buckets by Streeter and Wells along with a Dahn 3-pointer provided the largest lead of the half, 19-10, with 10:57 remaining.
The College of Charleston countered with an 11-2 run behind five points from Simmons to knot the game at 21-21. The ever reliable Wells kept The Citadel within striking distance, scoring four points over the next 3:25 of the half, including a jumper to make the score 28-25. Followed by a Holston layup, the Bulldogs had drawn within one point with 1:52 remaining. Goudelock knocked down the Cougars fourth trey of the half to provide the four-point lead as the teams headed into the break.
The Bulldogs will have a five-day layoff before they travel to Elon and take on the Phoenix on Saturday evening. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
