Wessinger, Strickland Shine at Christopher Newport Classic

Newport News, Va. - Freshman Micah Wessinger reset the school record in the 800m while redshirt senior Sarah Strickland improved the school record in the mile as the Bulldogs competed in the Christopher Newport Classic on Saturday.

Wessinger recorded a time of 2:18.59 for fourth place, improving her personal-best. Wessinger previously held the school record in the 800m when she ran a time of 2:19.82 on Jan. 29.

Strickland improved her personal-best and the school record in the mile when she posted a time of 5:18.12 to finish seventh overall. Strickland beat her 2008 school record time of 5:19.45.

Sarah Creel advanced to the finals of the 55m dash when she recorded a prelim time of 7.64 seconds. Then she established a personal-best time of 7.61 seconds to finish 11th overall, earning the eighth all-time record.

In the 20lb. weight throw, Monique Edwards placed third with a throw of 51' 0.25" and Emily Green finished seventh with a mark of 46' 7.50". Anna Fuzy added her name to the record books when she threw a mark of 37' 2.50" for ninth place to earn the eighth all-time spot in The Citadel's top 10 list.

Kevin Hardy and Christian Graham advanced to the finals with personal-best times in the 55m dash. They ran a prelim time of 6.44 seconds and 6.57 seconds, respectively. In the finals, Hardy finished sixth with a time of 6.49 seconds and Graham ran 6.60 seconds for 11th place. Hardy's prelim time tied eight all-time with Charles McAfee's 1984 record at VMI. 

Graham also finished ninth in the 200m dash with a time of 23.06 seconds and Hardy competed in the long jump finishing second with a mark of 22' 9.25".

Freshman David Miller placed third in the 400m dash with a time of 50.91 while Frankie Dioguardi ran 2:01.57 in the 800m to finish ninth overall.

Brendan Kight finished ninth with a time of 4:26.20 in the mile run and Herbert Johnson ran his first ever collegiate race in the 5,000m when he ran a time of 15:46.77, falling just shy of the 10th all-time record.

James Harris tied his personal-best when he jumped 6' 4.25" in the high jump, finishing fifth overall. 

In the 35lb. weight throw, Chris Castagno placed third with a mark of 50' 2.50" and Matt Earls broke his personal-best record and moved into the sixth all-time spot after he threw 49' 3.75" for fifth place. William Norris also broke his personal-best record with a mark of 43' 4.25". Earls joins Castagno and Quintin Turner in the Bulldogs' 15m club, with all throwing 15m or better in the weight throw this indoor season.

Turner had another good performance as he threw 45' 2.25" to finish fifth in the shot put and he threw 48' 5.25" in the 35lb. weight throw to finish sixth overall.
