Savannah, Ga. - The Citadel Basketball team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 2 when they travel to Savannah State for their final non-conference contest of the season. It marks the first meeting between the two schools since Feb. 22, 2006, when the Bulldogs emerged victorious, 70-61. Tip-off for the game is set at 4 p.m.
The Citadel (6-7) has defeated the Tigers in each of the six previous meetings in a series that dates back to 1989. Bulldog fans are familiar with the Tigers (5-9) this season, following their appearance at the CollegeInsider.com Skip Prosser Invitational on Nov. 28-29. Savannah State split with Central Connecticut State and UVA-Wise during the event.
"Coach Broadnax has done a nice job with his team," added Head Coach Ed Conroy. "We got a chance to see them in the Skip Prosser Tournament. They went 1-1, and I was impressed with their players and how hard they played. Watching them on tape, ever since they were here, they have a lot more confidence. They have found an identity on the offensive end to go along with defensive intensity. They are a much improved team from what we saw here at McAlister Field House."
SHIFTING THE SCORING RANKS: Point Guard Cameron Wells has now scored in double figures in each of the last 17 contests, dating back to a meeting with Wofford (2/28/09). (Dec. 29) TOREROS DEFEAT TIGERS BY SEVEN: Senior forward Roberto Mafra matched his career-high in points with 14, helping the University of San Diego men's basketball team defeat Savannah State 63-56 on Tuesday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. It was the third time this season Mafra reached the 14-point mark and the fourth consecutive game in which he registered a double-digit point total.
The Toreros (6-8) snapped their brief two-game losing skid as they never allowed the Tigers (5-9) to capture the lead throughout the game, displaying quick ball movement to neutralize the pesky zone defense put forth by Savannah State. The two sides were tied at four after a minute and twenty seconds into the game, but USD used a 10-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to regain the advantage and never looking back.
In addition to Mafra, three other Toreros reached double-digits in points. Senior guard De'Jon Jackson scored 13 while senior forward Chris Lewis and junior guard Matt Dorr each contributed 12 points. The quartet of Mafra, Jackson, Lewis, and Dorr combined to shoot 64.3% from the field, pacing the Toreros to a 56.8% shooting percentage for the game.
After USD increased their lead to 14-4 when Lewis hit a lay-up at the 16:03 mark to cap the 10-0 run, the Toreros would go on to stretch their first-half advantage to as much as 11 points when Dorr dialed up a three with 9:45 remaining.
Brandon Johnson nailed a long-distance three 12-feet inside center court line to beat the buzzer and strengthen USD's lead to 39-28 entering halftime. For the opening twenty minutes of action, the Toreros shot 13-of-20 (65%) from the field, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.
The second-half was controlled entirely by the Toreros, as they prevented the Tigers from narrowing the gap to no more than eight points until there was less than a minute left in the game. Savannah State closed the lead to 62-56 after Louis Arnold hit a lay-up following a steal as 39 seconds remained on the clock, but that was as close as the visiting opponents would get in closing seconds.
The Toreros were forced to rely on their free-throw shooting down the stretch after Mafra scored USD's final field goal with a contested lay-up at the 6:50 mark. San Diego hit six of their eight free throws in the final two-and-a-half minutes to seal the victory.
San Diego out-rebounded Savannah State 16-12 in the second-half with Lewis leading the charge with six boards, increasing his game total to a team-leading nine.
