Opening Remarks
It was a long day yesterday watching that tape. It wasn't a lot of fun in the office; it never is after losses, especially losses like that. After looking at the tape, from an offensive standpoint there were several things that were disappointing. Number one the drops that we had from some of our better football players, some of those occurred on third down as well. We had a couple of key protection breakdowns as well. The first fumble, Bart Blanchard got hit on a breakdown inside and of course the safety right before the half we had a protection breakdown right there as well which cost us big with the safety. Bart's movement was limited by his injury, and that didn't help him or us at all. We would have loved to have him to be able move or slide a little bit more in the pocket; I think he would have been able to a little more productive there. Bottom line though, the three turnovers, the interception, the two fumbles and the safety, you will not win a lot of football games having that many turnovers. We haven't had a game like that before and it is going to cost you.
On defense, we missed an awful lot of tackles. Their quarterbacks, both of them, really hurt us. Number one running and the football and especially earlier they had a couple of third down and long scenarios where they completed passes and that hurt us as well.
Overall when you look at it we were three for 11 on third downs and it we didn't give ourselves the chance to stay on the field.
A bright spot was Keith Gamble. We were trying to get a little more productivity from that kickoff return unit. We inserted Keith who really is a good athlete. He is our backup punt returner and when Andre leaves he will be the guy the next couple of years and I think he has found a home as the kickoff return guy as well. That unit in particular did a nice job of blocking and that was encouraging for us to see.
On Chattanooga
We had a good team meeting with our guys yesterday and the good news is we still have two football games to play and we still have a chance to finish this with a winning record. There have not been a lot of winning records over the last 10 or 11 years and our guys understand and know that. The goal is to win out these last two games starting with Chattanooga, get six wins for the season and keep on building in the off season. I don't doubt that our guys will be back. We are excited about the matchup and I think we matchup well against Chattanooga this week.
Looking at them on film, as a team they are a lot different than they were last year. One of the reasons is the quarterback B.J. Coleman, the transfer from Tennessee, bought them some big play power if you will. He can throw the football extremely well. There is a new coaching staff, they have a couple of transfers in as well and some of the younger guys have stepped up.
On defense they are the third rated defense in the league. They are very similar to Elon and very similar to Samford in terms of their style. They are very sound fundamentally with what they do. They have some very good pass rushers. Josh Beard, a defensive end, leads the country in sacks and they have freshman on the other side that has done a great job as well. They have very good rush and we're going to have to do a good job with our offensive line. In the secondary, I believe they have 11 interceptions now. They have done a great job just getting to the football as well.
Offensively as I said, Coleman really is the difference. Their wide receiver Blue Cooper has done a good job. I think he has caught over 65 passes. They love to get him the football in third down situations. They also have some other skilled guys that will get down the field and catch the football.
On special teams, their kicker Craig Camay is 13 for 16 on field goals. They had two onside kicks that were successful against Appalachian State. They were down by three touches, onside kick and got a field goal. Another onside kick again and got a touchdown. They fake punts through out the year and fake field goals. So looking at special teams, it should be exciting and we are going to have to be sound with all of our coverage and make sure we understand what they are trying to do.
I know our seniors are excited about finishing strong, building and getting these to wins to have something to look back on.
Is there a health update on the quarterbacks?
I wish I could give you something concrete that you could sink your teeth into. Really the situation isn't that much different with Bart and Miguel Starks. They basically lived yesterday with Andy in the training room. I don't think that either one of them is any worse from Saturday. Both of them will continue to get treatment. Miguel will be fine for practice. I am hoping that he will be able to move better. We played him in the second half and he wasn't as effective as we would have liked from a movement standpoint. Obviously he couldn't push off the one leg in particular. He is not moving like we would like him to and that limits some of the things we can do an draw up for him. Hopefully Miguel, as the week goes on, is able to get from whatever percentage he is and be more productive. We will have to see what Bart looks like when we go to practice on Tuesday.
Will we ever see Kevin Hardy and Gamble in the back together for kickoff returns or do you like Tyler Starnes back there to block?
That is a possibility. You have a pretty good idea as to where teams are kicking the football, so we like to get our top guy there and we did that with Kevin Hardy. Tyler Starnes is kind of the backside guy, picking off guys and to do a good job with blocking. We will probably keep Starnes on that and try to keep Keith as the main guy. If there are teams that can kick either side effectively then we'll probably have both of those guys.
Have you ever had team that spread so widely from really good to not very good in the course of a season?
In my early years at Leigh High we were like that. There are a lot of different things that go into it, number one is making sure the young guys are consistent with their performance from week to week. If you look at it, at different times have had younger guys that haven't been as effective as they need to be. This game in particular we had our older guys that dropped a couple of balls that you don't like to see. It is hard to explain that, because if you are going to be successful those veteran guys have to step up and make plays. It has been a lot of different things I think and there are no excuses, we have to get everyone more consistent with what they are doing on the field and have a chance to win those.
